Most of us want our coffee machine to give us perfect cups every time we turn a dial or press a button.
More importantly, we want our drinks to be ready in under a minute. Some of us would also like the machine to complement the best features of our kitchen.
It would really be nice if the espresso machine can add another wow factor in the kitchen.
And if you want both, then we suggest considering the Jura Impressa J9 One Touch Coffee Machine.
The Jura Impressa J9 One Touch Coffee Machine
Dressed to impress, the J9 is Jura’s top-of-its-class coffee machine that has surprisingly good looks and a remarkable performance. This baby comes with enough improvements in user controls that will make you strike other Impressa coffee machines off your list.
It is obvious that the Swiss brand has been listening to what its dedicated followers have been saying. After all, the brand’s customer-centric philosophy is one of the fundamental reasons why Jura remains at the top of the world of coffee machines. It also helps to know that this company has never let its guard down when it comes to innovation, something that it has done for almost 9 decades.
It would be wise to remember that Jura produces different lines of coffee machines. The J line, for example, uses a combination of a rotary switch and crisp buttons for its user controls. Jura also placed a much higher emphasis on the styling of the machine than on other lines.
The Jura Impressa J9 is far from perfect. It has a very nice appearance, despite having mostly ABS plastic as its material. The size of the reservoir is more than adequate to give large households and even small businesses enough drinks for everyone. Already standard in Jura products is the inclusion of the CLEARYL Blue filter. As always, you can opt not to install the filter.
The grinder has enough grind settings to allow for enhanced drink customization. Fans of decaf will also love the bypass doser of the J9. One downer is the single boiler design of the Impressa J9. The company addresses this by incorporating a fast-heating technology into the boiler and using an automatic milk frothing system.
While there are some aspects of the J9 that require some serious consideration, you will love its coffee making performance. This is our favorite feature of the J9. And if you do not care about its hefty price, it would be nice to bring the Impressa J9 home.

Aesthetics, Footprint, and Form Factor
We find the Impressa J9 to be surprisingly pretty. It has a brilliant silver scheme complete with black accents and polished chrome. The machine has the appearance of an ultra-modern appliance without appearing too obnoxious. The large color display with its realistic graphics can add a futuristic flair to your kitchen.
We commend Jura for making a handsome machine, even though the housing consists mostly of plastic. The plus side is that ABS plastic is lighter than metal. It is also durable and tough. While Jura did an amazing job of creating a machine that looks so luxurious, we did not expect to see a machine that uses more plastic materials in its construction given its price.
Another aspect of the J9 that surprised us is its footprint. Many super-automatics require a large real estate for them to fit in. The J9 only needs an 11.2-inch wide and 17.1-inch deep countertop for it to stay secure. We do recommend adding a couple of inches on both the width and depth of the area where you intend to place the machine in. What amazed us is the height of the coffee machine. It is only 13.5 inches tall, making it one of the most compact espresso machines we have ever seen.
Unlike the other Impressa machines, the J9 comes with a milk spout on the left of the front panel. Most machines have the spout on the right. We find the arrangement to be quite awkward for those who are already accustomed to the conventional arrangement of coffee and milk spigots.
Features and Functionalities
Like any other espresso machine, the Jura Impressa J9 comes with a feature set that can determine whether one should buy the unit or not. Understanding the implications of these features and the different functionalities of the machine should help you make a wise buying decision.
We cannot help but emphasize the usefulness of the J9’s user controls, especially the bright screen. The display gives you a visual feedback of the different selections you make on the machine. From choosing the pre-programmed beverages to setting up the system maintenance, the information on the screen can never be clearer.
We did expect a touchscreen functionality in the J9 because of its price. Too bad we must content ourselves shuttling between the rotary switch at the top of the J9 and the bevy of buttons on the sides of the screen.
The top-mounted master control switch lets users to navigate the different menus of the J9. It includes general, coffee, and maintenance settings, among others. Six buttons flank the display; three on each side. These buttons allow users to make selections from the display screen.
Ample Programs and Customizations
Jura integrated 6 different coffee programs into the design of the Impressa J9. These include 3 each of either coffee-only beverages or milk-based drinks. This is great for fans of delicious pressure-brewed coffee or perfectly-pulled espresso. There is also a ristretto program for those who want a ‘shorter’ version of the espresso.
Lovers of milk-based drinks will have macchiato, cappuccino, and latte to choose from. Unfortunately, the J9 does not provide for a Flat White, which is already growing in popularity. There is good news, however. The J9 features a separate milk spout and a dedicated program for both hot water and milk. It is possible to concoct your very own flat white by first making an espresso. The machine produces a very fine milk foam, which you can blanket over your espresso.
Customizing the drinks is also easy, thanks to an intuitive user control. Our only complaint is that the maximum temperature setting of the machine does not produce a hot-enough beverage. Even the milk froth is not hot enough. This can have an impact in the way we enjoy our drinks.
The J9 One Touch has a 72-ounce water reservoir that is enough to make coffee for a small office. There is one downside to the design of the water tank, though. You cannot hook the unit to an existing water line. You will have to refill the tank manually. This is a bummer, since most similarly-priced machines already allow connection to a water line.
Regardless, Jura is thoughtful enough to include a water filter with the package. You may choose not to use this filter. This is especially true if your household water line already has an integrated filter. Another more practical way to minimize scaling is by using distilled water instead of ordinary tap.
The J9 One Touch can also hold 8.8 ounces of coffee beans. This is in addition to the bypass doser compartment that can accommodate enough decaf for two.
Single Boiler System
We expected the Jura Impressa J9 to have a double boiler system, given its price. It disheartened us to learn that there is only one boiler in this machine. There is no way we can brew coffee while we are steaming milk. Single boiler espresso machines also tend to produce beverages that are not as hot as those produced by double boilers. This helps explain why many people complain about their drinks not being hot enough as they would have wanted.
We are thankful that Jura has integrated a milk frothing system to address some of the shortcomings of a single boiler design. The system requires the attachment of a vacuum tube that runs from the machine to a milk container. The technology draws the milk from the container, heats it up, and forms the fine foam that gets dispensed through the milk spout.
It is also worth mentioning that the J9 retains the Thermoblock technology of other Jura products. The system guarantees faster heating times and allow users to enjoy their beverage in a relatively short time.
Durable and Efficient Grinder
One distinguishing feature of a super-automatic is its bean-to-cup functionality. The different processes of making an excellent coffee from scratch occur in only one machine. There is no need for a separate grinder or boiler.
The J9 integrates a durable conical burr grinder that comes with 6 different levels of coarseness or fineness. The six grind settings are enough for most users. However, we have seen lower-priced machines that come with 15 to 18 grind settings. Coffee aficionados often require absolute precision in the strength of the coffee doses. Having six levels will not give coffee purists the kind of precision they need.
Telescoping Butterfly Spigots
We felt compelled to include this feature of the J9 as one of those worthy of your attention. Some machines have spigot design that is very limited. They do not allow you to put that many different sizes of cups under the spouts. In most cases, any cup that is taller than 5 inches will be very difficult to place under the spout.
The J9 is different. For one, the spigots can accommodate a 6-inch tall coffee mug. It also does not matter how wide your cup is. The design of the dual coffee spouts allows users to move the spigots far from each other. They call this the butterfly action. This is very handy when preparing a pair of espresso, ristretto, or coffee shots.
Unfortunately, you cannot enjoy the same convenience when making a latte-style of beverage. The milk spout is just too far from the left coffee spigot. This prevents users from placing the cup in one place where both the coffee and milk spigots will dispense their contents into the same cup.
Operation, Cleaning, and Maintenance
You must give credit to Jura for making the operation of the Impressa J9 as hassle-free as possible. The user controls now combine the convenience of a control knob and the intuitiveness of dedicated buttons. Add to this a large screen and you have an interface that is very easy to use, navigate, and manipulate.
Mastering the different menus of the J9 will require time, nevertheless. It is good that Jura utilizes a bright LCD screen instead of the outdated, text-only LED technology found in lower-priced Impressa models. The colored, image-filled display can reduce the time needed to master the different aspects of the machine’s operation.
Before you operate the machine, we strongly recommend reading the manual. Jura provides very clear instructions on how to set the machine up. This includes the attachment of different parts and accessories to the machine. You also get to choose whether to use the CLEARYL Blue filter or not.
One thing everyone needs to know about the J9 is that the espresso machine is intuitive. It takes note of your preferences every time you run the machine. It then stores the frequently-used settings and drink preferences. You can then access these settings with a mere press of a button. Unfortunately, tweaking and recording one’s drink and settings preferences can take time.
The same is true with the maintenance of the J9. Setting up a maintenance cycle can be a real headache. You will have to go through every bit of parameter that the machine wants you to input, so that it can perform its job. Setting the machine up should pave the way for an effortless maintenance routine.
There are some aspects of cleaning and maintenance that the J9 requires a more hands-on approach. Regular and frequent cleaning of the milk hose is a must. Emptying the dregs box and cleaning it afterwards is also critical. Emptying, cleaning, and drying the drip tray is also necessary.
As for the brew unit, there is no way you can remove it from its mounting. You might think the brew unit will be a headache to clean. Jura designed its brew unit to be very durable. While this part requires cleaning, you can do so by putting a cleaning tablet that Jura formulated. The water container also requires descaling, especially if you do not use the CLEARYL Blue filter.
Who this Product is For? / Should You Buy This?
The J9 is for tech-savvy coffee drinkers. While its user interface is simple, tweaking the different settings of the machine to suit one’s preferences can be daunting. Add to this the number of beverage and customization options. You get a machine that is more complex to operate and master than what its simple design suggests.
This Jura coffee machine is also excellent for large homes, especially households that can consume coffee like they consume water. On that note, the J9 should also be a wonderful addition to the staff lounge of a small office. Employees will be thrilled to have a machine that can produce stunningly delicious beverages in seconds. Commercial establishments that want to serve specialty coffees can also put the J9 into a special place in their facility.
Obviously, countertop space is a major consideration when deciding to get any coffee machine. While the J9 has a narrow front, it still requires a deep countertop.
It goes without saying that the J9 is only for people who do not have problems spending a few thousand dollars on a machine. Using the filter and other accessories can also increase the operating cost of the J9.
Jura Impressa J9 vs Jura Impressa Z9
For a few hundred dollars more, it would be more ideal to get the Impressa Z9. The machine offers more refined and better-quality coffee recipes. The Z9 has a grinder that is gentler to your beans. The brew unit also allows for improved control of the dosing strength. It has a double boiler, too.
For all the innovations integrated into the Impressa J9, we cannot say that the machine is the best super-automatic you can buy.
We also do not think its plastic construction, single boiler design, and feature set can justify the price tag that the J9 comes with.
The machine looks beautiful, though. And it can deliver amazing beverages every time.
The J9 also has a remarkable engineering that makes the machine truly deserving of the high marks it receives from reviews.
This should be enough reasons for people to get interested in the Jura Impressa J9.
