I don’t know about you, but for me, most things that come out of turkey are usually exquisite and mysterious, and this includes their coffee too. I once met a guy that told me that brewing Turkish coffee is an art form, and every part of the process, from selecting the right pot to using the right coffee beans, is like painting on a canvas; every step is important!

Anyways, I didn’t believe him until I discovered the art of Turkish coffee brewing myself, and I have to say, I was wowed by the fact that I ever doubted the artistic nature of the process.

What Is Turkish Coffee Brewing?

First, I’d like to start by saying that Turkish coffee is more than just another cup of coffee for Turkish people. Turkish coffee is a huge part of Turkish culture and customs, and Turkish people hold it very dear. That’s a lot of “Turkish” in one sentence!

To tell you how important coffee is to people—the Turkish word for breakfast is “kahvalti,” which literally translates to “before coffee.” How crazy is that? The word for brown is “kahverengi,” which means “coffee-colored.” Do you now understand what I mean when I say Turkey coffee is a way of life?

After that, the finely ground coffee is poured into a pot. Of course, it is a Turkish pot known as a “cezve.” A cezve usually contains cold, filtered water and sometimes sugar, depending on the desired taste.

Note: sugar is never added after it has been brewed in the cezve since it will disturb the ground beans at the bottom of the pot.

The pot is then allowed to cool for a minute or two to ensure that the grounds fall to the bottom before it is served.

In most traditional settings, Turkish coffee is served in demitasse cups. The brewed Turkish coffee is usually carefully poured to avoid pouring too much coffee ground along with the brewed coffee.

While the demitasse cups are similar in size to espresso cups, as they are quite small, you should not drink Turkish coffee like an espresso. Gulping down Turkish coffee too quickly might result in you consuming too much coffee ground in the process.

Instead, Turkish coffee is best enjoyed when slowly savored while chatting with friends, family, or business associates. It typically takes about an hour to finish a cup of Turkish coffee.

These days, it is common to see Turkish pots made from other materials such as silver, ceramics, and aluminum due to popular demand and the need for producers to meet the needs of varying heat sources.

These days, most Turkish coffee pots come in sets of one large cezve and smaller cezves. It is common for the smaller cezve to have lids, while the large pot in a particular Turkish coffee set usually doesn’t have a lid, as most Turkish customs allow.
